In Loving Memory of Perry Lamar Gary (“Bless” / “Mr. P”) June 8, 1965 – June 12, 2026 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. — 2 Timothy 4:7 With profound sadness and unwavering faith in God’s promises, we announce the peaceful passing of Perry Lamar Gary, affectionately known as “Bless” and “Mr. P, ” on June 12, 2026, at the age of 61. Perry entered eternal rest surrounded by the love of family and the presence of God at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. Perry was born on June 8, 1965, in New Haven, Connecticut, to the late Alice Cooke Gary and James Gary. He was raised in the New Haven community, where he became known for his warm smile, generous spirit, and genuine love for people. As a child, Perry could often be found racing up and down Tilton Street, creating memories and friendships that would last a lifetime. Known affectionately as “Bless” by family and friends and later as “Mr. P” by countless students and colleagues, Perry dedicated over 25 years of service to the New Haven school system, where he positively impacted the lives of many young people. His caring nature, patience, and ability to connect with others made him a beloved figure in the community. Following his years in education, Perry continued serving others as a desk attendant with the Housing Authority of New Haven until his illness prevented him from working. Above all else, Perry loved the Lord. He was a faithful and devoted member of Trinity Temple Church of God in Christ, where he served faithfully under the leadership of Bishop Charles H. Brewer III for 17 years. His faith was not merely something he professed—it was something he lived. Even during his final days, Perry spoke of the goodness and faithfulness of God and found comfort in listening to gospel music. His unwavering trust in the Lord was an inspiration to all who witnessed his journey. Perry had a passion for sports and was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He loved football and baseball, both as a player and a spectator, and enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends. His laughter, storytelling, and kindhearted nature brought joy wherever he went. Perry was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Cooke Gary and James Gary; his beloved grandmother, Carrie Bell Cooke; his grandfather, Robert Cooke; his aunt, Lilly Bell; his uncle, James Cooke; his aunt, Helen Cooke; his uncles, Ralph Cooke and Donald Cooke; his aunt, Betty Cooke; and his uncle, Cleveland Cooke. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving sons, Tyrese Gary and Marquette Gary; his beloved grandchildren, Amari Gary and Zaniya Johnson; his devoted sister, Brenda Haynes of Hamden, Connecticut; and his brother, Michael Gary of New Haven, Connecticut. He is also survived by his cherished aunt, Margaret Cooke of Georgia; four nieces and one nephew; six great-nieces and two great-nephews; his special bonus brothers and sister in South Carolina; his God sister Lisa Gray, his dear friend Beverly Ward; and a host of cousins, extended family members, church family, and friends who loved him dearly. Perry’s life was a testament to faith, perseverance, kindness, and love. He touched countless lives through his service, his friendship, and his unwavering devotion to God. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we rejoice in knowing that he has heard the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant, and has entered into the eternal peace of his Heavenly Father.
