Nikeysha Wright

On Sunday, June 25, 2023, the phenomenal woman, Nikeysha (Nikkey) Monayé Wright peacefully gained her wings. Nikeysha was born on February 7, 1974, in New Haven CT. She was the daughter of the late James (Bunky) McLean and Irish (MeMe) Wright. Nikeysha was a native of New Haven and was known as and preferred “Nikkey”. Nikkey attended New Haven Public Schools from elementary until graduating High School in Community in 1992. Throughout her post-secondary educational career, she was very active in the arts and attended New Haven’s Educational Center for the Arts (ECA), which afforded her the opportunity to do something she was very passionate about, which was DANCE. She and her sister friends, Tishshanna and Lee Lee even danced for well-known rappers Jay Z and Nice and Smooth back in the late 80’s early 90’s. Nikkey furthered her education by earning a bachelor’s degree in human services at the University of Bridgeport. Although, she could never just stop at one accomplishment, so she went on to further her education and obtained her master’s degree in human services from Albertus Magnus College. Nikkey worked in the human services field for over 29 years, where she started at Marrakech and held various positions, such as Program Director and most recent working one-on-one with a client she served for many years. Additionally, she held the most recent position as Program Manager at Continuum of Care based in New Haven, CT. Throughout her years of service in the human services field, she assisted, encouraged, and cared for many people, and mentored others to do same. Nikkey’s lifelong focused was to ensure that her family would be prosperous and successful; and that was her mission. She was willing to sacrifice, work long hours, extra shifts, further her education, and personal development to make sure she was always leading by example. Nikkey was a compassionate and a loving mother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend and she loved her entire family and friends unconditionally. Always being a beacon of inspiration, encouragement, and a helping hand. Many knew Nikkey as being the responsible one of the family who was serious about her business. She left home at the age of 18 and never returned to the nest as she became a homeowner that holds sweet unforgettable memories. Nikkey was also known for giving many she encountered a nickname and everyone she named still carries their nickname until this day. Nikkey has always been a hard worker and worked hard for all her assets. She was the best mother that Krisshonn and Naria could have. She enjoyed watching her favorite basketball team, Miami Heat play with her son Krisshonn and going out for breakfast at her favorite diner, State Street Café with her daughter, Naria. Nikkey also enjoyed growing her plants saying, “don’t let my plants touch each other, because they will die”. She was into quality fashion and was a great dancer. Nikkey was predeceased by her paternal grandparents Mr. Jacob (Poppa Jake) and Mrs. Mary Eula (Nana) Dawkins; and Great Aunt Shirley (Aunt Barbara) Moses. She leaves to cherish great memories to son, Krisshonn (Kris) Wright of New Haven, CT; daughter, Naria (Tootus) Hatcher of New Haven, CT; two sisters, Tori McLean Christopher (Kenneth), Swan Wright and brother Dyshant McLean of New Haven, CT; maternal grandmother, Patricia DeVore of New Haven, CT and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends just to mention a few, Lynette (Aunt Nette) DeVore-Mack of West Haven, CT; King (Uncle Tommy) McLean of New Haven, CT, Aunt Cassandra McCoy (Aunt San the Ran) of East Haven, CT; cousins Yolanda (Yolan) Moses, Omuni (Om) Barnes of New Haven, CT; Gwendolyn (Rally) Moses of West Haven, CT; Uncle James (Klink) DeVore of New Haven, CT ; brother friend, Lueark (Herk) George of East Haven, CT; sister friend, Carolyn (Carol) Underwood of New Haven, CT; and longtime neighbor and sister friend, Ramona (Mona) Davis of New Haven, CT. Nikkey will be remembered for all the great life qualities she endured and displayed. We will truly miss our “Lil Nik” as she would always say “I’m well”. She will forever be in our hearts!
