Mary Shelton

Mary Elizabeth Shelton, beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and cherished friend, was born on August 9, 1929, in Ashland, Virginia. A longtime resident of Meriden, Connecticut, she lived her 96 years with strength, dignity, and an unshakable devotion to her family and faith. On September 9, 2025, she transitioned into eternal rest, surrounded by her family, closing a long and beautiful chapter of love, resilience, and service. Mary was the daughter of Charlie Green and Mary (Johnson) Green. She was predeceased by her siblings Vernelle Perry, Rose Belle Derricott, and Edward Green Sr. Mary inherited resilience, compassion, and fortitude from her parents and family—particularly her grandmother, “Miss Ada” Johnson, and her grandfather, “Papa” Houston Johnson. These qualities guided her throughout her life and helped to shape the lives of those she loved. She was a faithful member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church for 62 years, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to her church community. She devotedly served on the Usher Board, Missionettes Choir, Willing Workers, Pastor’s Aide, and as a former Deaconess. One of her favorite pastimes was planting and tending to flowers around the church, a joy she cherished for many years. Mary’s faith was the foundation of her life. She loved God deeply and sought to live out that love in service and care for others. She worked at Connecticut Valley Hospital for many years, balancing her career with her devotion to raising a large, loving family. Mary was known for her grace and no-nonsense spirit. She never hesitated to speak her mind, but behind her firmness was an even greater devotion. Her greatest joy was her family—she loved them fiercely, fussed at them when needed, and always stood by them when they needed her most. She is survived by her children: Alvin J. Shelton Jr., Ernestine E. Shelton-Mason (Ellis), Roberta C. Shelton, Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) Loretta N. Bryant, Michelle E. Shelton, and Joely D. Shelton; her grandchildren: Shawn Shelton and Christopher Durant, whom she lovingly helped raise, as well as her other cherished grandchildren: Lorraine Winston, Nelson Winston, Ernestine Green, Mukai Johnson, Kenneth Shelton, Alex Shelton, Chevelle Shelton, Karren Giller, Gregory Bryant Jr., Langston Bryant, Chelsea Shelton, and Timothy Franklin Jr,. She also leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren. She affectionately called her children and all her grandchildren her “flower garden,” which brought her immense pride and joy. Mary is also survived by her nieces and nephews, many beloved cousins and extended family members—all of whom she cherished—and her devoted cousin, Nathaniel Fountain, whose enduring and steadfast presence through loyal calls and visits over the years brought her great comfort. In addition, she leaves behind her loving companion, Roscoe Byrd, and two faithful friends: Judy Green, her devoted friend of many years who visited her with care and love, and Dorothy Marrow, with whom she shared countless hours of conversation and laughter. Mary’s memory will live on in the lives of all those she nurtured and inspired. Over the years, she welcomed countless relatives into her home with love and generosity, providing them with comfort, guidance, and a sense of belonging. Her unwavering support and steadfast care shaped the lives of each relative who entered her household. Her home was more than just a residence; it became a sanctuary of family, faith, and resilience. Her family takes comfort in knowing that Mary’s legacy of love, strength, faith, and fortitude lives on—and that she is joyfully reunited with her loved ones who went before her.
