Margaret Lewis

Margaret Marie Lewis, 65, departed this life September 30, 2016 at Yale New Haven Hospital-St. Raphael Campus. She was born in Kinston, NC on January 28, 1951 to the late Roscoe and Amie Garner. She was the last living child of the Garner family. Margaret attended Eastern Wayne High School and graduated in 1971. She moved to New Haven, CT with three of her sisters. Then her journey started by work in at Pratt & Whitney in North Haven CT for many years.. Late in life she met Riley Lewis, the love of her life. They were married on May 5, 1979 at Union Temple Church. After marriage, she and her Riley became the owners and operators of Lewis and Lewis Enterprise, a trucking company. They leased to Mayflower Van Lines. Riley taught her to drive 18-wheelers and she became an excellent driver. Her gif for detail and organizational skills kept their business practices successful. They traveled across the country for over 15 years doing what they loved because they loved being together. Being a wife and mother was a delight for Margaret, a true Proverbs 31 woman who ‘looked well to her household’. It was not uncommon for her to lay out matching outfits for her and Riley for Sunday worship or other events they attended. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. After many years of attending Union Temple, and a Riley became full members in 2008. Margaret enjoyed attending church and the many fellowships and celebrations. She loved the Word and encouraging music. She love the Word and had several favorite scriptures- Psalm 91, II Tim.4:7, & Psalm 23. One of her favorite songs was ‘I’m Coming Up the Rough Side of the Mountain”. She trusted God to take her over each ….. She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving faithful husband of 37 years, Riley Lewis, three sons, Franklin Lewis of Fredericksburg, VA, Vincent (Jackie) Garner, and Brian Colburn of New Haven CT. She had nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She has one brother, Charlie Grey, Jr. of LaGrange, NC; six sisters in-law Betty Pierce (Ralph), Bernice Lawson(William) Laura Green (Robert), Carrie Talley (Jimmy) Rosetta Fairchild, Evelyn Brown, all of Spotsylvania, VA. Brothers in-law are Daniel Perry Sr. of Hamden CT, Russell Lewis(Joanne), Same Lewis and Melvin Smith of Spotsylvania, VA. She is further survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends. Two special nieces Alice Jordan, Diane Perry; two special friends, Daisy Sayles and Fannie Jackson as well as adopted daughters Shirley Joyner, Oosie Sayles. She was predeceased by her parents; five sisters, Clara, Annie, Swannie, Marion and Hilda. Five brothers: Stanley, Bruce, Billy, Roscoe, and Jessie; A son, Kevin Lewis, Sr., a daughter, Rosalind Lewis, and grandson Kevin Lewis. Margaret was richly loved and will be greatly missed.
