John Belton Sr.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of John Benjamin Belton Sr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and friend, who died on September 7, 2026. He was born on March 18, 1950 to Sam Belton and Minnie Drakeford-Belton. John grew up surrounded by family and faith. Those early years shaped the humor, generosity, and steadiness he carried throughout his life John graduated from Jackson High School in Camden, South Carolina. He worked for many years as a machinist. He is survived by his devoted wife, Surether Belton. One sister, Mattie Belton-Brown. One son, John Belton Jr. Three daughters Ebony, Yolanda, and Elizabeth Belton. Three grandsons Josiah Belton, Jy’air Hill, Kiyoshi Robinson. Three granddaughters Janaija Bentley, Reign Spruill, and Klariteé Spruill. Sister-in-law Tanya Little and brother-in-laws James Little and Melvin Butler. Two special nephews Clifton Belton and Tyler Little. Two adopted sons EJ Duberry and Eric Tinney. One goddaughter Tameka Grant-Mack. One special aunt Carolyn Gardener affectionately called “Aunt Chick” by John. A host of nephews, nieces, cousins and a wide circle of friends. His legacy of kindness and devotion will continue in the lives of all who loved him. He was predeceased by four brothers Horace, Sam, Curtis and Charles Belton. Three sisters Jessie Belton Butler, Emma Belton Jones, and Hattie Belton Nunley. John built a life centered on service, hard work, and deep love for his family. He was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he served on the Usher and Missionary Ministries. John was a member of James H. Wilkins Lodge #9 PHA, Eureka Chapter #1 HRAM PHA, Order of Eastern Stars Sheba Chapter #1 PHA, and the International Order of Turtles. John thought that he was one of the “Original Kings of Comedy”. He had a natural ability to entertain through jokes, dancing and was known for his famous splits. He will be remembered for his quick humor, love for the Dallas Cowboys and UCONN men’s and women’s basketball teams, a shot of C and C, his fashion sense, love of cars and the many ways he made others feel included. John’s favorite saying– Hello Somebody!!!
