Jerry Ashley

Jerry C. Ashley Jr., 77, of New Haven, affectionately known as “Papa J" and "J-Real" departed this life on Thursday, June 15, 2023. The youngest son of six children, Jerry was born on October 11, 1946, to the late Maberta Williams and Jerry Ashley. Jerry attended and graduated from the Florida Public School System. His family then relocated to Brooklyn, NY, where he married his first wife and three children came from this union. After the passing of his mom, he later moved to Connecticut to spend more time with his dad. Jerry enjoyed fishing, playing horseshoes, and above all, he loved baseball. Through softball, he met Priscilla Jones, who shared his passion for the game. This began the next chapter of his life. Jerry then became a father figure to Priscilla’s three young children and soon after, they married, and one daughter came from this union. Jerry was a hardworking and dedicated father. Jerry gained full time employment at Command Corporation, Milford, CT until he retired. He greeted everyone with a smile. He would often be found spending most of his time in his mancave listening to his "oldies but goodies". He would come upstairs to solicit his opinion which would always start a debate. He was large in stature, but indeed a quiet and gentle soul. Jerry leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Jerry Cardell Ashley III (Lucell) of Roselle, NJ, and Lawrence J. Washington III of New Haven, CT; five daughters Andrea Ashley of New Haven, CT, Maberta "Tawan" Ashley of New Haven, CT, Lakeisha Tyson, of Ocala, FL, Theresa Holmes (Henry) of Charlotte, NC, Lynnette Dockery of Meriden, CT and Candice Carberry (Tobin) of Hamden, CT; 20 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas Brown, Earl Brown, Joseph Brown Sr., Bobby Brown Sr., Bay Brown and one sister Janice Brown Daniels. Jerry was an amazing, caring, loving individual. His heart was pure, sympathetic and enormous. He was a father to many and never met a stranger he did not want to extend his hand of help towards. So many friends became family to him. He will be missed and forever in our hearts.
