James A. Powe

This day marks the home going of a serious man who touch the heart and souls of many. One who unselfishly gave to whoever needed a hand to better themselves in life. Death embraced James A. Powe (Uncle James) on June 9, 2020 at the age of 81, at the Arden House & Rehab Ctr. In Hamden, CT. He was born December 25, 1938 in Cheraw, S.C to the late Lemuell Sr. and Hannah Smith Powe. Powe was raised in a Christian home, at an early age and became a member of Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church In Cheraw, S.C. Graduated from Long High School. During high school, he worked at Cheraw’s Hospital, today the name is Cheraw Medical Center. After he relocated to New Haven CT, he joined the U.S. Army, serving his country faithfully for over 4 years. After returning home Uncle James worked at the V.A. Hospital in West Haven, CT. From there he worked at Armstrong Rubber until his retirement. He also worked at Leon Bakery as a Driver until they closed. He had a love for cars and NASCAR Racing along with his godson Jemell and friends. He was also a big fan of baseball. In later years he would watch NAscar racing on weekends as well as baseball. Uncle James leaves to cherish his memories 1 Son Steven McCoy (Yvonne) of Randallstown, MD; godson Jemell Brown of New Haven, CT who took special care of Powe along with his mother Penney Gray of Hamden, CT. They were always there even when his health begin to fail along with his niece Louise Harris, whom he was awfully close with as well. James also leaves a sister Marian Powe Bellamy of Charlotte, N.C; a special relative Javon Fulton of New Haven, CT; 3 granddaughters Shonta Epps(Malcolm), Chanel McCoy both of MD and Genesis Brown of New Haven, CT; 3 great grandchildren Kamren & Kristian Epps, Karsyn Williams all of MD. 3 sister in laws Eula Powe of Chesterfield ,S.C, Ethel Powe of Charlotte, N.C and Rebecca Powe of New Haven; two best friends Rosee Brown of Hamden,CT and Ernest Edwards of Darlington,S.C. along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by brothers Cary Powe(Erie), Lowell, Linwood Sr., Shelton Sr., Howard, Perry, Lemuel Jr. and Dock B. Powe. Sisters Edith P. Bullard(James Sr) Gladys P. Watson(Bill), Roseanne Powe, Lula P. Crawford and Cora P. Woods. A brother in law Joseph Bellamy Sr. (Nat). A life well lived, James Arthur Powe.
