Sarah Streater

Sarah Jane Streater, 89, of New Haven, Connecticut. , Was born on September 4, 1930 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was one of seven children born to the union of Dock and Leo (Bittle) Hanna. She was reared in a church going family and gave her life to Christ at an early age. After attending public schools in Ruby and Chesterfield she along with other members of her family moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1952. She joined and remained a longtime member of the Mother’s Board at Faith Missionary Baptist Church, West Haven Connecticut. The glue that held it all together, small in stature, she had a big personality characterized by her infectious laughter and her gift for making everyone feel special. Every queen wears a crown and her crowns were her hats. The queen of hats had one for every occasion: church hats, statement hats, and ultra fancy hats. She paired her hats with stylish flair to her stunning ensembles. Reflecting her devotion to family and church, she attended numerous gatherings, weddings, showers, parties and graduations. You name and she was there smiling with pride. Sarah leaves a wonderful family to cherish her loving memory, including her children Elizabeth(Kenneth) Roberts of Decatur, GA, and Levaughn Streater, Mary Jane ( Keith Mannafee) Preston, George Anthony Streater, and William “Tiny” Preston Jr., all of New Haven, CT.; twenty eight grandchildren and forty two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vester Frank Streater; her children, Eva Mae, Vester Lee, Mamie Louise, and Ewords Streater; her brothers, Costin Sellers, Rudolph, Duncan, Willie and Baby Hanna; and her sisters, her twin Annie Mae Myers, Beulah Nash, Minister Jessie Burch; and her longtime companion William Preston, Sr.
