Ojie Hunter
January 26, 1944 - February 8, 2022
Ojie Hunter 78, of New Haven, Connecticut, entered into eternal rest on February 8, 2022. He was the husband of Sarah Huckabey Hunter. He was born on January 26, 1944, to Deacon Hosie Hunter Sr, and Laura Bell Brock Hunter in Sawyerville, Alabama. He confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Sawyerville Alabama. Ojie left Alabama in the 1970s and gained employment at Yale University where he worked in Dining Services for over 40 years, until his retirement in 2010. While in Connecticut, he met and married Sarah L. Huckabey on October 15, 1995, and they shared 27 happy years together. Sarah’s 7 children, 12 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, he proudly called HIS children. Ojie was an active member of Union Disciple U.F.B Church in New Haven under the guidance of Bishop L. McClam, Sr., for over 40 years and served in a number of capacities, within the church taking pride as a Deacon, proudly serving as Chairman. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Shirley Wiggins, and grandchildren Angela Griffin (LaMarcus Griffin, Sr), LeGerret Mosley(Rengen Mosley), and great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and LaMarcus Griffin, Jr. Brother, Rev Simon Hunter(Viola). Sons: Bernard, James (Marty), Stephen, and Barry Huckabey; Daughters: Stephanie, Marilyn (Peaches), and Carolyn (Nett) Huckabey; Grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Hosie & Laura, his son Willie Hunter, brothers, Napolean, Robert and Hosie Hunter, and his sisters, Beulah Mae Hinton, and Dorothy Hunter Mayfield.
