Minnie Harris is a native of Rockingham, North Carolina. She was born on June 1, 1924 to Anna Leak Harris. Minnie in her early years growing up in Rockingham, North Carolina attended Rockingham public school system from elementary school all the way through to graduation from Rockingham High School. In her years of living in Rockingham she joined the Popular Spring Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend John F. Ferguson. As a member of Popular Spring Baptist Church, Minnie was very active; she participated in the Willing Worker Choir, Secretary of Sunday School, and the Usher Board. This is what she loved doing. Later Minnie decided to come to New Haven, Connecticut with her eldest sister Sarah. While living in New Haven Minnie first joined Elder Mitchele Church on the corner of Charles & Orchard Street. There she met Henry Gamble, Villa McKnight, and Minnie Green who then ask Minnie to come and join St. Matthew’s Church along with them. Minnie Harris joined St. Matthew’s Church in 1962 under the leadership of the late Reverend Lloyd Taylor. St Matthew’s remain as Minnie’s church home until her final days on this earth. As member of St. Matthew’s Church Minnie participated as much as possible in the Willing Worker Choir. She worked faithfully for many years as the Secretary & President of the Willing Workers Choir. She served as a First Aid Nurse for a long time; she would always be on duty. Minnie was also the Secretary of the Pastor’s Aid Club for many years. Sister Harris was a sweet person; she always had a smile for anybody. She always would say “I want to help somebody along the way so my living won’t be in vain.” Sister Harris will be missed by everyone. Minnie wanted to say - to her Church family : “I love all of you!” and to Bishop Gay Thank You for being so nice to me and my family in my time of troubles. Sister Minnie Harris was predeceased by her mother Anna Leak Harris, Step- father Arthur Harris, three sisters: Sarah McCray-Latney of New Haven, CT., Birdile Harris and Maggie Calhoun of Washington, D.C. Also two brothers Benford Harris of New Haven, CT and Charles Harris of Rockingham, N.C. She was the last sibling of her family and took good care of them all with God help; and now her work here is done. Minnie wanted all to know that she is going home now to meet Jesus Christ. Don’t worry about her; she has finished what the Lord wanted her to do. Minnie also wrote to my precious Wearing Family. Thank You for being so nice to me you were there for me when I was alone and didn’t have no one to turn to but Jesus. You and your children and husband stood by me- I love all of you- my children Valerie Wearing (deceased), Janis Wearing, and JJ Wearing I love you all. Don’t worry for me if you want to cry- do so. Just remember me for what I was to you. I’ve gone home now. I will wait for you – and greet you with a smile when you come in. To all of my friends thank you for everything. To my nieces and nephews please get to know Jesus for one day you will need him to see you through. I love all of you, but I’ve been with you a long time and it is time for me to go home. Please don’t cry; for I will be there for you in spirit if you need me. You can turn and I will be near to aid you. Remember the good times we had together over the years. I can’t stay another day with you as Jesus has come for me. Be good to each other with Love! See you in Heaven. Love Your Aunt Minnie. Minnie Harris leaves to cherish her memories a host of Nieces, Nephews, Grand- Nieces, and Grand-Nephews in the New Haven and Washington D.C area.
