Mary Johnson

August 27, 1927 - May 31, 2022

Mary Lee (Goodwin) Johnson transitioned peacefully surrounded by her family on May 31, 2022 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Mary was born on August 27, 1927 in Orangeburg, South Carolina to the late Hester and William Goodwin. After losing her parents at an early age she was raised by her aunt and uncle, the late Stacy Booker T. and Della Sumpter. Mary attended school in the Orangeburg County Public School system and upon graduation she briefly relocated to Washington DC where she would meet her future husband, Eugene G. Johnson. The couple would make New Haven, CT home for themselves and their children. After the passing of her aunt Della, Mary moved back to Santee, SC to care for her uncle and remained there for several years before ultimately moving back to New Haven. Mary attended Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Santee, SC where she grew into Christianity and was baptized. While living in New Haven, CT she joined St. Matthews U.F.W Baptist Church while also maintaining membership at her home church in SC. When she moved back to SC she was involved in several church activities including being a very dedicated and active member of the Christian Aid, the Booster Club, vacation Bible School and Sunday School. While at St. Matthews she was a faithful member of the Willing Workers Choir. Some of the things she enjoyed were spending time with her family and friends. She also had a love for fashion, shopping, traveling, cooking, baking, puzzles, game shows and listening to gospel music. She was loved and admired by all who knew her and will be remembered as a very humble, classy, caring, loving, kind, and giving individual. Mary leaves to cherish her memory: Daughters, Cynthia Harris (Anthony) of Hamden, CT and Hope Johnson of New Haven, CT; Granddaughters, Kimberly Johnson, Tyhessia Ferguson, Monica Lawrence (Marlin), Dominique Wilson (Anthony), and Shallon Johnson; Grandsons, Shafiq R.F. Abdussabur (Mubarakah), Andre Johnson (Vicky), and Tommel Johnson; sixteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a loving sister-in-law, Elizabeth Goodwin; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene G. Johnson Sr.; daughters, Delores Dee Dee Johnson and Linda G. Johnson; sons, Eugene G. Johnson Jr. and David Johnson; twin brother, John Goodwin; sister, Inez Thomas. Services will be live-streamed through Facebook “MFH Livestreaming page” .
