Doris Mims Johnson Morrison -Little was born December 2, 1935, in Mobile, Alabama. The daughter of Henry and Edna Mims received her wings on September 8, 2020, at Yale-New Haven Hospital Smilow. Doris lived at 39 Rodney Street, West Haven, CT, with her husband, Wilhart Little. Doris was married to Charles Johnson, Sr., and with that union, they had four children, Charles Jr., Natalie, David, and Curtis Johnson. Her second marriage was to Jimmy Morrison, and they had one son, Darrell Morrison. On October 24, 1992, she married the love of her life and she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Wilhart Little. Doris attended the University of New Haven and graduated with a Master’s Degree in the field of Social Work (MSW). She was a member of the Black Social Worker Association and the Treasurer of the State of CT. Nutrition Association. Successfully, she gained employment at The Connecticut Mental Health Center, Family Counseling of New Haven CT, and New Haven Housing Authority. In the final stage of her career, she was employed by The University of CT College of Agriculture Department of Extension and she worked diligently as a Community Nutrition Educator for twenty-five years. Doris was very active in her community. Doris was an outreach worker, where she helped families, adults, and children with limited income. She also assisted at the shelters by crocheting blankets and donating to the hospitals and single women. As a community activist and advocate for racial equality, she has improved the quality of New Haven. She volunteered countless hours as a voter registrar. Her political accomplishments included being the Treasurer for Jessie Jackson presidential campaign, Treasurer for the 6 Ward Town Hall Committee, Coordinator for Henry Parker for Mayor, Board Member and Treasurer of the Hill Development Corporation, to name a few. Her passion for cooking led her on many journeys. Doris loved seeing children progress and helped them in her unique way. She was a member of Saint Martin de Porres for several years. She settled into Saint Luke Episcopal Church, where she was a faithful member. Doris was a strong-willed woman. She had a tough exterior, but a soft/gentle interior. She resided at Benchmark Senior Living in Hamden until her hospitalization. Doris leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Wilhart Little, her daughters, Debra D Sargent (Albert) of Gales Ferry, CT, and Natalie Penn ( New Haven CT), her sons, Albert Brookes (Seattle, WA), David Johnson (CA), Curtis Johnson (West Haven, CT), and Darrell (Joanne)Morrison (Florida), her sister, Mary Clark (New Haven, CT). Her grandchildren of whom she had a special bond with were Kamilah Sargent Brown (Groton, CT), Tamaika Morrison Blackmon (South Carolina), and great-grandson Zavion Foschini (West Haven, CT). She was predeceased by her parents Henry and Edna Mims, son, Charles James Johnson Jr., Brothers, Helga, and Henry Mims Jr., Sister, Edwina Mims, and granddaughter Natasha O. Johnson. Doris will be truly missed by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
