Sophie A. Wylie

It is with great sadness that our beloved mother Sophie Wylie departed this life and transitioned into eternal rest on Monday, February 5, 2024. Sophie was born on May 9, 1940 in Rock Hill, South Carolina to Thomas Purcell Wylie and Irene Brice. She moved to Connecticut in her teens and continued her education, graduating from Hillhouse High School. From her early days in Rock Hill through the migration to New Haven, Sophie held dear memories of the Wylie family. This included values of fastidiousness and decorating her home with elegant touches. In the Wylie way, she put together a fine meal, always with a beautifully set table. Sophie was a homemaker, and she raised her children with partner James Senior. Her children were the apple of her eye. She could not be more proud of Keith, Mark, and Lynn, and they returned the love wholeheartedly. They cherish memories of their mother’s love and her peanut butter cookies, baked ziti, and other great eats. Sophie was also integral to the upbringing of her grandchildren, Lea, Jonae, and Jonathan. She took pride in being the grandmother who demonstrated by her actions how to be there for others. Being there for others is something we will all remember Sophie for. Her house was a haven to those who needed not only shelter but a home. Sophie’s generous heart remained one of her best attributes throughout her life. In her golden years, you could tell the seasons by the wreath hanging on the door along with candy or treats on the ledge outside for anyone who passed by showing her generosity and thoughtfulness, yet another way to spread joy. Creative, frugal and resourceful, she was a magnet to the finest things in life and best sales to get them! She’d tell her children, cousins and nieces the “it” things to have according to Home Shopping Network, QVC and Oprah’s List. She also lit up watching Bravo and cooking shows. This she loved, as well as traveling with her sons. During her trips and visits, she has met friends from all over, who adore Ms Sophie. Sophie has cruised and flown away to rest in the arms of our God who has called his daughter home. She leaves to mourn her: children, Keith and Mark Wylie and Lynn Wagner (Jonathan), her grandchildren, her sister cousin Ruby Blue, and a host of nieces and nephews. Sophie will join her parents, recently departed sister Maple Senior, special aunt Ann Henderson and brothers and sisters.
