Phyllis J. Beasley

PHYLLIS JEAN BEASLEY was born on April 29, 1941, in Oriental, NC. She was the daughter of the late George Beasley and Sallie Whitaker-Beasley; and was the third oldest of seven children: George, Doris, Telzy, Charles, J. Dale, and G. Bernard. PHYLLIS grew up in the communities of Oriental and Arapahoe, NC. She received her academic training at the Gatlin Creek School in Arapahoe; and was a member of the school’s last graduating class. In 1959, she graduated from the Pamlico County Training School, in Stonewall, NC. As a young girl, PHYLLIS and her family attended the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Arapahoe. After relocating to Connecticut, she found gainful employment at the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, a Historical District in New Haven, CT. PHYLLIS was a dedicated employee of the Pratt & Whitney Aerospace Company, Hartford, CT; from which she retired after completing thirty-eight years of service. PHYLLIS was the mother of two children: Gwendolyn and Rodney; she loved her family. PHYLLIS J. BEASLEY was an avid traveler. Her favorite spots to visit were Las Vegas and North Carolina. She loved the Atlantic City, Foxwoods, and Mohegan Sun casinos. She especially enjoyed the “get-away weekends” shared with her friends. Nicknamed, the “Old Girls’ Gang,” by her daughter Gwendolyn, PHYLLIS and friends never missed an opportunity to travel! PHYLLIS was the consummate cook. She was renowned for such southern dishes as chopped BBQ, chicken and dumplings, cornbread, mouth-watering sweet potato pies and vanilla wafer pound cake! When she was not cooking or traveling, PHYLLIS would kick into her “shop ‘til you drop’ mode! If there was a sale or bargain to be had…she found it! While convalescing at the Yale New Haven Hospital (Saint Raphael’s Campus), PHYLLIS passed away on Saturday, April 20th, after a long illness. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Sallie Beasley; her siblings: George Beasley, Telzy Beasley, and Bernard Beasley. PHYLLIS J. BEASLEY will be sorely missed by all who loved her. She leaves to celebrate her memory: her children: daughter Gwendolyn Beasley, of Hamden, CT; and son, Rodney Beasley (Theresa) of, Ocean Springs, MS; and an honorary son: Travian Green, of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren: TyRiq James and Tiffany Janae; one sister: Doris B. Collins of Arapahoe, NC; two brothers: Charles Beasley (Marilyn) of Luray, Virginia; and J. Dale Beasley (Phyllis) of Oriental, NC; and the remaining members of the ‘Old Girls’ Gang,” and a host of nieces, nephews relatives and friends. Lovingly Submitted, The Family!
