Ophelia Johnson Bloodworth

Ophelia Johnson Bloodworth entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at McLeod Regional Medical Center at the age of 84. Born in Darlington, SC. On February 10, 1939 to the late Carrie L. and Evander Johnson Sr. She was the eldest of their six children. Ophelia grew up in Darlington, South Carolina where she joined Round O Baptist church and immersed herself in the usher ministry, singing in the junior choir where she made the Lord her first love. Ophelia attended Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology. Ophelia had a calling greater than herself which she answered. In 1961 she made Connecticut her home where she married the now late Bobby Bloodworth Sr. She became a member of Community Baptist Church where she set out to make her mark becoming active in the following ministries: Ushers Ministry, Vice President and Chairperson; Correspondence Secretary, Captain and Training Instructor; and President of the Margaret C. Willoughby Missionary Society Ministry of Community Baptist Church. She was always willing to give a helping hand. Member of the Progressive National Convention Ushers’ Department, serving as the second Vice President of the Ushers Department of the Eastern Region (from Virginia to Maine). During 1972, Ophelia became a member of the Universal Masonic Brotherhood and Order of Eastern Star. Serving in the capacity of Financial Secretary for thirteen years, Worthy Matron for 6 years, Correspondence Secretary for 3 years and Associate Grand Matron of State for 8 years. Her work career has been varied. She was employed at Sikorskys Aircraft until she retired in 1999. Ophelia enjoyed the Women’s Conference of Ebenezer AME Church multiple years in Fort Washington MD, where her daughter is a long time member. She enjoyed attending functions with her son Earl and daughter-in-love Sherene sponsored by their respective fraternity Omega Psi Phi and Sorority Sigma Gamma Rho. I can do all good things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 Ophelia had an insane love of hats, loved going on shopping trips, growing flowers, posing for the camera. She also loved creating party plans for banquets and programs. She had a love of Christian crossword puzzles. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially traveling to be with her children. Her steadfast moral code drew her to always help whenever and however she could. It was nothing for her to drop any and everything to assist her children, friends, and family. Ophelia relocated back to Darlington, SC in 2000 to help take care of her mother. She rejoined Round O Baptist Church upon her return, where she immersed herself in the following ministries, President of the Missionary Ministry, Chaplain of the Deaconess Ministry and Pastor Aid Ministry. Ophelia later heeded the call to join Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Ophelia is a mother of six children, grandmother of 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings Margaret Williams Brunson and Andrew Johnson and her sons Archie Mills and Bobby Bloodworth Jr. Ophelia’s quick wit, no nonsense attitude of life, indomitable spirit, zest for life and all things holy will be missed and cherished in memories by her remaining siblings, Evander “Junior” Johnson of Orangeburg, SC, Jr, Mary Dargan, of Darlington, SC, and Willie Johnson, of Darlington, SC, her only daughter Gail L. Bloodworth of Laurel. MD, three sons Lucius L. (Marie) Bloodworth, Calvin Johnson Bloodworth both of West Haven, CT; Earl L. R. (Sherene) Bloodworth of New Haven, CT., seven grandchildren Bobby (Tiffany) Bloodworth III Meriden, CT, Devon Michael Bloodworth and Isaac E. Bloodworth of New Haven CT, Stuart D Smith of New York, NY, Darnell D. Bloodworth, Angelyc Jefferson and Tyler Johnson Bloodworth of West Haven CT. Nine great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
