John Croston Carlton Sr.

The Life and Legacy of John Croston Carlton, Sr. John Carlton, Sr, 86, our beloved Husband, Dad, Grandfather, and friend, was born on September 23, 1936, in Savannah, Georgia to the late Zeline Cuyler- Smith and John Croston Carlton, but dotingly raised by his late dad Coy Smith, Sr. John was the eldest of Coy & Zeline’s five children. He attended Beach High School in Savannah, Georgia. At the tender age of 19 in 1955, John relocated to New Haven, CT, and became a lifelong member of Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church. In John’s formative years, he worked at Melba Iron and Connecticut Window Cleaning. He later became a dedicated and valued employee of Pratt and Whitney for over two decades until his retirement in 1994. In 1958, John became the devoted and loving dad to John Carlton III following the birth of son Barry Carlton, & daughter Jacquelyn Carlton – Williams. John was a dad, second to none. John was married to his beloved and cherished wife, Marjorie Carlton, for almost thirty years. To know John is to know he was a “jack of all trades.” John was a brilliant handyman and mechanic in his past time. He loved to work in his workshop and backyard. He enjoyed meeting life-long friends for lunch and coffee. John, in his essence, was a genuine giver and loved to see those around him smile. He will be forever missed by all. John started his next life with his heavenly family on November 19, 2022. He was preceded in death by his mother, Zeline Smith. Father, Coy Smith, Sr. Brothers, Marvin Smith, Franklin Smith, and Coy Smith Jr. He leaves to cherish his life, his wife Marjorie Carlton, and his three children, John Carlton III, Barry Carlton, and Jacquelyn Williams. His grandchildren Jazzmyn Moultrie and Mya Carlton. Bonus sons Alphonso Flemming and Kenneth Flemming Sr. Bonus Grandchildren; Martell Flemming, Terrell Flemming, Kenneth Flemming Jr., Jermena Davis, Whitney Flemming, and Ashley Flemming. His sisters, Vivian Polite (Robert) and Mamie Smith – Taylor (Burdell), and a host of nieces and nephews. John was affectionately known as Dad, grandpa, Captain, Pop, Mr. C, Junior (amongst his aunts and uncles), Diddy bop to his co-workers, and “Captain C” to his late beloved, Uncle Willie.
