Irving M. Smith

Irving McClean Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, affectionately known to all as “Mack” or “Mackey” was the son of Anabel (Ruth) Allen Smith and the late Irving E. Smith. He was born on September 11, 1959 in the US Virgin Islands on the island of St Thomas. Mack transitioned from his early life and entered into the heavenly realm on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Yale New Haven Hospital of New Haven, Connecticut at the age of 60 from liver cancer. Mack moved from St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands to New Haven, Connecticut with his family in 1963 at an early age. He was educated in the New Haven Public School System where he attended Hillhouse High School. He enjoyed attending school as well as his favorite extracurricular activity, karate. Mack also took great pleasure in delivering the weekly newspapers, The Courier, in the morning and the New Haven Register in the afternoon. Mack was employed by Harold’s in downtown New Haven where he was a busboy and a cook. After graduating from high school in ‘77, he worked for the UI for 10 years until he left on disability. Mack became known as the neighborhood handyman, from doing projects on the homes of family and friends to small businesses and restaurants. In his spare time he could be found in New York keeping up with the latest fashion trends of the city and visiting his very close cousin Jimmy Harris, other family members and friends. As a member of St Luke’s Episcopal Church, Mack served as an usher. In his latter years he became a member of the men’s club and also contributed to several endeavors including the turkey drive, diaper drive and the food pantry at the church. In his spare time, Mack cherished quality time with his daughters and grandchildren. He was a loving, timely and a supportive father and grandfather. Mack always told jokes, and traveled to his second home, New York City. His favorite team was the New York Mets where he would attend games yearly with his daughter. Mack will be remembered for always moving at his own pace, his favorite blue Cadillac, wearing anything rocawear or blue and pinching cheeks and grabbing noses of all his daughters, nieces and nephews. Mack leaves to forever cherish his faith, strength, and precious memory of his life and love: mother, Anabel Smith of North Haven, Connecticut, daughters Notonya McCoy of Hamden, Connecticut, MyaJuan Hunter and Kirvanna Jones both of New Haven, Connecticut; his two grandchildren Dajhana Hunter and Grey Sharpe of New Haven, Connecticut. Four siblings, Ira J. Smith of Antioch, California, Everson (Chubby) Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, Allen E. Smith (Jennifer) of Oceanside, California and Keith B. Smith (Christina) of Nottingham, Maryland; his aunts Brenda C. Smith and Dorothy T. Smith of Littleton, North Carolina, Alice Jackson of Inglewood, California, Mary Allen and Margaret A. and Leroy Walwyn of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; uncles, Glendale M. Smith (Vanetta) of New Haven, Connecticut and Thomas Greenaway of New York, and beloved cousin Devon “Dove” Ryan of Boston, Massachussets. In addition, Mack leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Mack was preceded in death by his father, Irving E. Smith, brother Irvin Sam Smith, cousin Jimmy Harris, maternal and paternal grandparents, maternal aunts and paternal uncles.
