Ernest Knox

Ernest Lee Knox, commonly known as Lee, age 80, of Hamden, CT, was born on July 28, 1944, in Rock Hill, SC; to the late Sidney and Mary Ann Knox. He departed this life on August 5, 2024. Ernest (Lee) attended Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, SC before later relocating to Brooklyn, NY. After residing in New York for many years, Lee relocated again, settling down in Connecticut and making New Haven his home. As a hard worker, Lee devoted many years to service - from his tenure at Southern Connecticut State University where he late retired, to owning and operating a janitorial business. He love the Lord and was a proud member of Immanuel Baptist Church in New Haven where he proudly served as a member of the church men’s choir and the usher board. His love for family was undeniable. He often doted over his grandchildren and great children, traveling frequently to and from New York to spend time with them. To his nieces and nephews, he was cool uncle Lee, with whom they could all confide and always count on for great advice. To his stepchildren, he was “Mr. Lee”, the man who helped raise them, kept them out of trouble, and no matter what, was always there for them. And his love for his siblings was unmeasurable. Lee’s mild-mannered, cool persona earned him the befitting nickname “Hollywood.” Though he was soft spoken, and often private, when the moment called for it, he would definitely speak his mind. Lee’s endless collection of NY Yankees fitted caps was not only a measure of his unmatched style and “swag”, but also a reflection of his love for baseball. Lee enjoyed sports. He loved going to the games and watching the games on tv, especially when the NY Knicks and NY Giants played. He leaves to cherish his memory five grandchildren of New York, Javon Laney, Elijah McCray, Sayquan McCray, Joshua McCray and Myaish Wilson; a host of great grandchildren, a step daughter Wanda Coppage (Ude) of CT, four sisters, Betty Knox and Mary (Jerome) Talley of CT, Lillian Doris Knox of NY, and Maggie Knox of GA; three brother, John Knox and William (Naomi) Knox of CT, James (Doretha) Knox of SC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. And a very special companion, Mary Fulton. He was predeceased by his parents, daughter Cherise Wilson, brothers, Bobby and Sidney Knox, sister Delores Stewart and stepson Demetrius Coppage.
