Emery Turner

It’s with great sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Emery Wade Turner. He died on March 4, 2021 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, after fighting a long illness. Emery was born June 12, 1968 in Hartford, CT. He is survived by his parents, Gwendolyn (Turner) Powell and Rev. Granthan Powell, and father Lance Gibson. Emery is also survived by his devoted and loving wife, Yolanda Fountain Turner and their sons, Payton Turner and Camron Turner. Emery lived in Colchester, CT until the age of six with the love and support of his extended family. He attended elementary and middle school in East Hartford, CT. Emery attended Bloomfield High School and graduated in 1986. He attended Springfield Technical Community College and Porter Chester Institute. Emery embraced his faith throughout his life and accepted Christ as his savior when he was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Hartford CT at the age of 13. He married the love of his life, Yolanda (Yodi) in 1997. Emery and his family were loyal and faithful members of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Middletown, CT, where he served as a Trustee. Emery’s commitment to his faith and family were present every day for all to see and was the driving force behind everything he did. Emery’s work centered around transportation and cars. Emery was employed for several years at Dattco Bus Company and most recently worked for AutoVIN. Emery loved cars, but his passion was Buicks. He was a vintage car enthusiast; he was a member of the Buick Car Club and owned several vintage cars. He loved a “clean” car. It brought him great joy to see the fruits of his labor after completing the detailing of a car. Emery loved his family, both immediate and extended. His devotion to family was always on display. He cherished the family legacy and will be remembered for spending time with the family elders, listening to their stories about how they relocated from Georgia to Connecticut. Emery embraced those stories and kept the family trips down south close to his heart, as well as family reunions. Emery leaves behind to celebrate his legacy 5 sisters; Krystal Powell of Middletown, CT, Rachel Powell of Huntsville, Alabama, Shelly Kerner, Heather Gibson and Donya Gibson Gilmore (Kevin) all of Columbus, Ohio, nieces Madison Gibson and Mia Lillian Powell and nephews Langston Kerner, LaSean and Lawrence Thomas. He also leaves a host of cousins, aunts, uncles and dear friends. We will miss Emery’s loving smile, playful sense of humor and true dedication to his family.
