Deborah Filyaw

Deborah Eileen Filyaw completed her journey in this life peacefully at home on January 25, 2024 in the presence of her brother Anthony. She was born on July 26, 1951 to the late Macceo Nathaniel Filyaw and Katheryn Bryant Filyaw. Deborah was born and raised in New Haven Connecticut where she graduated from Hillhouse High School and received an Associate Degree from Gateway Community College. After graduation, she secured a number of jobs, including serving as a Phlebotomy Technician; an Optometric Assistant for Total Vision Eyecare; a Healthcare Worker for Extra Hand, Inc. and held the position of Director of Placement for Sawyers Business School. In addition, she was a certified Reiki Practitioner. Deborah was a former member of Christ Chapel New Testament Church in New Haven Connecticut and later joined Kingdom Christian Cathedral in Milford Connecticut where she sang in the choir. She was an extremely talented seamstress, and had the ability to create outfits, costumes, curtains and anything she set her mind to. She designed and created a wedding dress for an Elite Designers Pageant, that was later worn by the model for her own wedding. She was also an excellent cook, and enjoyed preparing for holidays, family gatherings and events. Gardening was another love she had, and she could be seen outside caring for her plants and shrubs. Deborah was a member of Vital Element Productions, Inc., a creative arts organization co-created by her brother Liston, and served as the treasurer. She also enjoyed acting and was a cast member in some of Liston's plays. She was known for creating her own characters such as, "Madame Shoe Shoe," an improvisational character and for "The Lady In Red," in Liston's play,"Pender County." Deborah had a very pleasing personality and a positive outlook on life. In spite of her many challenges, she remained optimistic and determined to persevere. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, two brothers, Liston N. Filyaw, Windsor, CT and Anthony J. Filyaw, New Haven, CT; her godson, Dwayne Bryant, New Haven, CT and a host of cousins on both sides of her family. She is preceded in death by her parents Macceo Nathaniel Filyaw and Katheryn Bryant Filyaw.
