Alfred "Bo" Gomes

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, the Angel of Silence brought peace to Alfred "Bo" Gomes, ending his pain and granting him eternal rest. Born on September 27, 1956, in New Haven, Connecticut, Bo was a beloved figure known for his calm demeanor, strength of character, and kindness. Bo's unique qualities and early achievements were evident during his New Haven public school system education. His role as a mentor, guiding and encouraging the youth, was a testament to his potential and profound impact on the community. Bo's dedication to his career in Mortuary Science was unwavering. His fascination with the field began during his visits to Perkins Funeral Home in New Haven, Connecticut, where he observed Mr. Perkins at work. This experience ignited his lifelong ambition to become a Mortician. Bo's move to California in 1980 marked the start of his career at Solomon's Mortuary, where he pursued his dream with unwavering commitment. His move to California assisted Bo in honing in on his love for boxing. Bo trained upcoming fighters, helping them prepare for their start in the boxing field. The money he made from boxing helped Bo pay for his Mortuary schooling. For 35 years, Bo served families with Solomon’s Mortuary until the funeral home closed. He then continued his work at Harrison-Ross Mortuary until his health necessitated early retirement. For over 35 years, Bo was a devoted member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, where he found solace and community. He was a member and an active participant in various church activities. He cherished his role as Uncle Bo to countless nieces, nephews, and godchildren, who adored him for his caring nature and supportive presence. Bo's life was not just about work and family. He found immense joy and fondness in the casino. His annual cruises to various destinations with friends and family were a source of pure joy. When he wasn't cruising, he would take a quick flight to Vegas to see his favorite magicians, Chris Angel and David Copperfield. His keen sense of style was evident in his suits from Whalley Sample Shop, which he proudly wore in California, returning from visits to New Haven, reflecting his love for fashion and personal expression. A passionate Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Lakers fan, Bo's love for his favorite teams was unmatched. He never missed a game and could often be seen donning his jerseys, showing his unwavering support. His enthusiasm for the games was infectious, and he often gathered friends and family to watch the games together, creating lasting memories. When he wasn't on the move, you could find him at home in his favorite recliner watching Family Feud or the 6 p.m. news. Bo was also known for cracking jokes with the family, which we will miss dearly. Bo is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Jones Gomes, and his two sons, Chakeem Culbreath and Jeremy Gomes. Daughters Chereece Smith, Sharthia Bradley, Caprice Holly, Marlisha Smith, and Bonisha Gomes. Fur babies Blaze and Smokey. He was a devoted husband and father, deeply cherished by his family. Bo is also survived by his siblings: Adrian (Troy) Long, Brenda Gomes, Trudy (Charles) Roach, Clyde (Gina) Wilkins, and Stevie Brown; one aunt, Doris Debarrows; and a host of nieces and nephews. Bo was a proud grandfather to Mirikal Radford, Christian Henry, Cartier Mendez, Hailee Henry, Jaiden Henry, Rylee Grant, and Emani Culbreath. He was also a proud Godfather to Paige Goss, Romeo Fulse Jr, and Lailah Fulse, a role he took very seriously. His parents, Peter and Elizabeth Gomes and William Wilson, preceded him in death. His siblings Antonio Gomes, Denise Gomes, Keith Shane Gomes, and daughter Alina (Sammie) Henry also preceded him in death. Alfred Emanuel Gomes leaves a legacy of compassion, wisdom, and dedication to his family and community. His love for his family and community was a cornerstone of his character, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
