Alvin Jenkins

Alvin “Al” Jenkins, beloved and devoted son of Eloise Bynum Jenkins and John Jenkins (deceased), was born in Darlington, South Carolina, January 15, 1950. His creativity and affinity for the arts was evident at an early age and manifested in school and church. Those who knew him well witnessed his innate ability to express his artistic gift by drawing and demonstrate his passion for theatrics through dramatic performances. He received his education in the local public schools, graduating with honors from Mayo High School “Home of the Bears” in 1968. After graduation, Alvin enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably from January 21, 1970- January 20, 1972 in the culinary arts field. Alvin knew the importance of honoring God first in his life. Therefore, he accepted Christ as his savior, was baptized at an early age, and joined Friendship Baptist Church, where he served as a devoted member of the Friendship Baptist Church Usher Board. After relocating to New Haven, Connecticut several years later, he joined Community Baptist Church and continued his commitment to the service of God through the usher’s ministry of Community Baptist Church. With a quiet confidence, an even temperament, and a hard work ethic, Alvin was drawn to occupations that enabled him to interact with others. From retail sales and at Roses Department Store in Darlington to postal worker in Richmond, Virginia and Wallingford, Connecticut, respectively, he worked tirelessly, endearing coworkers and establishing lasting friendships. Alvin’s heart was as endearing as his physical statute was prominent. He loved God, his family, and his friends both near and far. While living miles away from his birthplace, he maintained an everlasting bond with old acquaintances and newfound friends. As a friend so aptly stated, “Alvin’s place has changed back to his beginning.” The Lord called Alvin to his eternal resting home, December 25, 2018. With heavy hearts, his family will forever remember their beloved son, brother, and uncle with fondness. Alvin’s memory is ensconced in his sister Marcella’s heart, for she was his vigilant caregiver until his homegoing. Joining Marcella in commemorating Alvin’s legacy include his dear mother, Eloise B. Jenkins; his brother Kenneth (Brenda-deceased) Jenkins; his sister Evelyn (Andrew) Thomas; his Aunt Lillie (Andrew-deceased) Bynum, and a host of relatives and friends. Alvin was predeceased by an older brother, Rommel "Jimmy" Bynum (Brenda) and nephew, Andrew Thomas, III.
